“Oh come on! Doug, why do you always put bodily function humor in your work?”
I get that from time to time, often from even me. We all have bodies, so we can all relate to bodily function jokes. It’s not the high art, but I like using it in my alien characters because it so grounds them in humanity.
It’s not easy making people care about Nnewts, just like it’s not easy to get them to care about a clay man or a worm in a cybernetic suit. I imagine it’s even harder to get people to care about fish, but when we see a little octopus say, “You made me ink!” we all get it. When we see Mr. Potato Head in the first Toy Story blow all of his plastic parts out of his backside, he is so much more than just a kid’s plastic toy… he’s one of us.

these guys are real pros. huh.
In summary: “Farts lol”
this is seriously awesome. Doug your artwork is always fantastic!
“It’s not easy making people care about Nnewts”. Not so, you had me at “…he nurtured a family.”
Looks like something big is about to happen.
Speaking of clay man, why does it end with “men”?
Woah, Ben and Benjamin posted at the same time….
I love your explanation. I will have to keep that in mind. I love “bodily function humor” though.
I can relate to nearly anything with a face, though.
I hadn’t thought of that before. That explains the Transformers movies. I also think that might’ve been a case of “if we do any OTHER kind of humor, it’ll fall flat, so we might as well knock the audience off-kilter”
I’m really loving this environment even just the amount we’ve seen so far. Giant mushrooms are NEVER bad, but you get double points for not recycling the art, and triple points for not making it the cliche ‘platform’ mushroom.
You completely redrew the background for each of the last three panels… I really hope you aren’t doing that for more complicated scenes. I’m not sure what sins that sort of penance satisfies.
I guess that’s why I do like bodily humor jokes. Sometimes they get seriously overused though, or don’t get used well in the first place (after all, the appropriateness can be dictated by plot and tone), and that’s why most people don’t appreciate them properly.
I’d like to add (though I’m not saying the fart joke detracted, far from it) that arguing also grounds an alien character in humanity. After all, we can all relate to that and the way the arguing is handled can speak volumes for personality and character relationships. It’s pretty clear they’re best buds because they don’t take offense to the insults and are simply venting agitation caused by nervousness.
Though bodily humor does help greatly when it comes to characters who can’t talk. It’s about the only way, then, to signify familiarity with something that seems absolutely outlandish looking. XD
I came for the family drama and promise of adventure, I stayed for the toots.
