Nice contrast from jubilant/triumphant in the last panel to terrified in this one. The Lizzark perched on the side of the hut is very creepy. Kind of feels like this has been the prologue and the main story will be Herk as an adult.
oh crap on a crap cracker.. the whole village.
This is why I could never live happily in one of these classic peaceful villages… they’ve got their own defense measures that do okay, but I prefer some kind of overarcing safety net of civilization.. even if it comes with a lot of bad side-effects.
Man, that’s the problem with infrequent updates. This is all expository stuff, but we’ve been with it for so long that it feels like the world we’ve invested in is falling apart! It feels like the middle or the end of a book rather than the beginning. Does that make sense?
Basically what I’m saying is HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO DEEPLY FOR THESE CHARACTERS?
Newts are the perfect animal for you to have chosen, Doug. They seem so vulnerable in many ways. I really fear for the characters. They are very heroic to stand up when the enemy is so big.
Reminds me of the movie Titan AE where the earth explodes in the first few minutes of the film. The humans in that movie were the soft, helpless ones who turned out to be not-so-helpless.
My heart is breaking for poor Herk because all I can think is that his mom isn’t going to survive this and he’s going to become a superhero because superheroes happen when you lose your mom (or both parents). And all the babies in the pool! Insert big fat tears from me, here.
I think it’s Mom’s order to never come back that hurts me the most. Not only is Herk about to lose everyone, he’s about to lose everything he’s ever known. It’s not just the end of his family; it’s the end of his whole world.
So this the story of Herk then? How he makes it alone and discovers his own ability to do magic like his dad (after he gets the ability to walk on his legs that is)? How he returns and exacts revenge upon the creatures that destroyed his village and slew his parents?
Also, in the first panel someone yells, “Where have the hunters gone?” implying that, what, there are only three hunters for the whole village? I just assumed that Gullimar, Urch, and Odetto were friends who went out to hunt, but that there were still more hunters in the village, not just those three. How small is the village to only have three hunters? Or are there more, but we haven’t been told yet why they are missing?
Too many questions and difficulty being patient…but loving this story so far. Keep up the great work Doug!
Oh, wow! Excellent turn-around there. Poor Herk. He is losing everything, as someone else said. And his poor mother! That had to be painful for her to say, to know that she’ll probably die, leaving him all alone, but she made the right decision. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

Or this is going to turn into a very surreal version of Finding Nemo.

Holy shit this is getting dark.
So good!

Wow! This shifted really fast. It’s only page 25 and there all doomed.
I love it. Keep it up. It’s going to be a fun ride
Ooooh, like Vikings! Pillage and plunder, YAY!
Well, okay, not so much fun for our protagonists…

really enjoying the artwork on this! The more dramatic it goes the more the art seems to flourish.
Why does that Lizzark need a sword? They have knives right in their hands…
