Those things that look like ears are gills. It’s how a baby newt breathes. It’s sort of like having your lungs sprouting off the sides of your head so you can wave them through the water to breath.
I’m raising baby newts right now and they have those gills growing off their heads. The baby newts are so small that it’s hard to take good photos of them, but I’ll try to get some images of them up.
Tonight at E3 I’ll be going on stage with Tommy Tallarico’s traveling symphony that play video games music, Video Games Live! No, I won’t be playing an instrument, though I’d give it a shot if they’d let me. The symphony is going to be playing selections from Earthworm Jim, and they’re bringing the original Shiny team up on stage!

I totally relate to the last line of this page from my 4 year old: “I’m not a baby!” I’m enjoying your new webcomic a ton. Keep up the excellent work!
Great to hear you’re going to E3 too Doug!
Man, creation is beautiful.
Ah, reminds me of my little half-bro, always wanting to be treated like the older siblings and not wanting to order off the kid’s menu, even though he never finishes eating the regular dishes…
Looks interesting so far. Can’t go wrong with amphibians.
Haha! You’ll wake up the babies!
I like very much that you’re doing research in (almost) realtime as you draw this.
MAN I suddenly give a crap about going to E3!
I think we all know this feeling
Wow, EWJ music is great music! That sounds great.
Am I the only one that finds the baby in the last panel to be so cute? *_*
He’d yell at you for calling him “baby” and probably pretend like he didn’t like being called cute.
Whaddayano… I stop by your facebook page on a whim, and found you had a brand nnew webcomic waiting for me.
And weekly is fine. All of my favorite webcomics are weeklies.
Ha, looks great so far.
I’m sure you get this a lot but I also wanted to tell you that the rest of your work is equally awesome.
I’m interested. Like I said: Bookmarked. I remember comments being removed on Ratfist; I was wondering how long it’d be before they were removed here. But I recall the reason why they were removed. Perhaps the controversy will not return here.
We got a mention from Scott Kurtz and Penny Arcade today. Some great guys doing great work, and I’m honored that they noticed our little webcomic.
First page and was hooked. More please!
Have you read “Right Ho, Jeeves”? There’s a character obsessed with newts who talks about them incessantly out of nervous habit when he really intends to make time with some girl. It made me laugh and think of Nnewts.
Jeeves & Wooster – it’s Gussie Finknottle who is newt-mad.
Just made this connection: you must REALLY like newts. They’re in this and in Catscratch. Were they Waffle’s pets in Gear, too?
